While zinc may prove to be a helpful therapy for COVID-19 based on its known benefits with other conditions and the immune system, there is not enough scientific evidence to suggest that zinc supplementation will prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19.

Selenium: Selenium is a mineral that has many functions in the body; like other minerals, it is needed for a healthy immune system. Selenium is available in many foods and is also available in supplement form. Most selenium studies to date have focused on thyroid disease, cancer, and cardiovascular disease. Recently, there are scientific papers that have been published as “Letters to the Editor” and similar that suggest that selenium may be beneficial, but these papers are largely observational, have many limitations, and have not gone through the rigorous peer-review process to validate the research methods and claims made. Without further validation, they should be interpreted very cautiously. At present, there is not enough scientific evidence to suggest that selenium supplementation will prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19.

Aluminum Salt: Aluminum salts have been safely used as adjuvants (ingredients that help vaccines build a stronger immune response) in vaccines for more than 70 years. Some aluminum salts have been shown to even be antibacterial. However, there is also evidence that having extremely high amounts of aluminum salts in our bodies can be harmful, causing problems that include memory loss.

People who got a 2 gram food supplement of aluminum salts alongside their hospital treatment had better outcomes, according to one study published in December 2020 that looked at 109 people who were hospitalized for COVID-19. The better outcomes included a shorter recovery time (by about 1 day), less inflammation, and fewer deaths. These results should be interpreted with caution. The size of the sample studied was very small and the methods used were not very strong, meaning that we can’t know if the results were actually caused by the aluminum salts or just coincidentally related. As a result, there is not enough research to suggest that aluminum salts could or should be used as a treatment for COVID-19. 

Vitamin C: This vitamin has anti-inflammatory properties, can support the immune system and is essential for the body to maintain the integrity of its blood vessels. The rationale behind studying the effect of studying Vitamin C during severe infections (COVID-19 and other conditions) stems from its antioxidant properties, which the body would benefit from during times of severe inflammation because this process generates harmful compounds known as oxidants. There is currently not enough evidence to support the use of Vitamin C for mild or severe cases of COVID-19 infection, in humans.

Vitamin D: This vitamin is one of the most frequently discussed in the guidelines for The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN). Normally, the human body can create Vitamin D, and requires adequate exposure to the sun to do so. It is essential for bone and muscle development, and patients who spend limited time outside usually have low levels of this vitamin. For this reason, researchers and clinicians recommend Vitamin D supplements for general health, and for its potential benefits to healing of lung tissues. The greatest benefit form taking Vitamin D supplements has been suggested in patients who already have a deficiency of this vitamin, with no evidence showing an added benefit in individuals who already have healthy levels. Vitamin D is not recommended solely for prevention or treatment of COVID-19, as there is not enough research that supports this use.

Omega-3 fatty acids: This is a type of fat that is present in foods like fish like Salmon and Mackerel, walnuts and soybean (among others) and has been shown to have an anti-inflammatory effect. This property posed the question of its benefit to support the body against the severe inflammatory response due to COVID-19, that causes negative symptoms. However, research has not determined the value of omega-3 fats for COVID-19 patients.
